London in the Sky

Last night we had THE most amazing time at London in the Sky, a 10 day pop-up restaurant which sees five of London’s best Michelin starred chefs prepare their delicious menus in a unique sky table dining experience seating 22 guests. Eating a Michelin starred meal 100 feet above the heady heights of Canary Wharf was truly a gastronomic experience unlike any other.
The experience kicks of with a lovely glass of Taittinger champagne before we boarded our one hour ‘flight’ for dinner. We weren’t sure what to expect, but the ride up 100 feet was really smooth sailing. And as we ascended the skies, the views that presented themselves to us were really amazing.
Our chef extraordinaire was Xavier Boyer from the award winning Michelin starred L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon who prepared a sumptuous five course meal for us. Alongside Chef Xavier was his sous chef and two helpers who really looked after us and provided some light entertainment. The energy up in the skies was really incredible as everyone was just so excited to be there.
Our first course was a royale of foie gras with an aged port reduction and parmesan foam. This was spectacular with the parmesan foam creating magic against the richness of the foie gras with its warm nutty overtones.
Next was a Sologne Imperial Caviar on a symphony of salmon tartar. This was also wonderful as the salmon was fresh and flavoursome. And the caviar was of course a delight.
Marinated black cod in miso was smooth and silky. And we loved the daikon and yuzu mousseline that accompanied it as it provided a citrusy contrast that balanced out the dish really well.
Free-range quail stuffed with foie gras was moist and tasty. It was served with the Robuchon signature mashed potatoes, which if you have never tried it, must rate as one of the top 3 mash potatoes of all time. It really was heavenly and well worth all the buttery calories.
The dessert was a lemon bubble, essentially a paper thin sugar ball filled with a lusciously zingy lemon custard, yuzu marshmallows and a yogurt ice-cream. This was a great way to end the meal as it was light and refreshing. It was superbly done and demonstrated immaculate technical skills.
We ate all this in a space of an hour, and it’s hard to believe that this can be done in such a short time but everything ran like clockwork. And there was so much theatre to the experience! Not only do you get the views, you also get to watch chef at work. Dining in the sky was truly special and unique. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday night!
